ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: AMERY

Young Belgian artist Amery has confidently announced his arrival on the scene with catchy pop tune "So Good". Featured on Buzzfeed UK's top 22 songs to listen to in April - it's definitely worth sitting up and listening. We caught up with Amery and found out more about the man himself.

You grew up in Belgium, has living there influenced your sound at all?

Yes, a lot! For example, if you turn on the radio, there are so many sounds as compared to Rwanda, where I was born. I think it gave me the power to push myself and try to do a little bit of everything.

Tell us more about your new single: So Good - what was the inspiration behind that?

I wanted to create a song just to remind people how good it is to fall in love. And also, I wanted to come up with a positive track that would put you in a good mood!

When did you realise music was for you?

I realised that when I was 5 years old. I remember being curious every time I heard a song on the radio; I would then try to play it on the toy piano that my grandmother bought me, because she knew that I had a strong liking for music. I also remember watching MTV around the same age and Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean came on. I felt such a connection to it that I decided that I wanted to do the same! Later on, I was always more interested in music than I was in school so I knew that music was me in my element.

What do you want to have achieved by the end of 2017?

I want people to know me as an artist and to be able to perform for an audience. My goal is also to release an album by the end of the year.

Are there any Belgian artists we should be on the look-out for?

Other than the great Stromae that you probably know, I would invite the British music lovers to check out my label-mate Ivy Mode who has already released two very cool singles: Money Can’t Buy and Body Next To You (read WFA's interview with her here).

Who else are you currently listening to?

I listen to Rihanna every day! I love, love, LOVE her music! It never gets old. I think we could say that she’s one of my musical heroes.

Finally, what does success mean to you?

To me, success means that people appreciate and recognise your hard work. But the real success for me would be to be able to make people happy and bring them joy while doing it!
